Some knowledge of the reaction of nitrous acid with the amino-group was already in existence, and it was known that aminobenzoic acid could be converted into hydroxybenzoic acid by the action of warm aqueous nitrous acid, for which reason Kolbe had sug-gested to Griess that in like manner picramic acid might be converted into a hydroxy-derivative. In some reactions, it is necessary to use acetic acid as a solvent.
